This gaol or jail, housed inmates from 1842 until 1972. The unique octagonal building and courtyard were cutting edge architecture for the time period. The gaol was considered very humanitarian, as the architectural divisions allowed prisoners to be separated by range of crime as well as sex, greatly enhancing the rehabilitation process. Canada's last public hanging took place in the north side park in 1865. In 1901 the Governor's house was added to the site. Huron Historic Gaol is now a National Historic Site.
