Shakespeare Country at a Glance
Comprised of prominent municipalities such as Stratford,
London, Woodstock,
Goderich and St.
Thomas, this region of Ontario
is truly unique, combining idyllic country-style living with metropolitan flair.
The region has a definite British feel—from the city of London, situated on a
river called Thames and offering tours atop double-decker buses, to the town of
Stratford, firmly planted on the shores of the Avon
River and home to the Stratford
Festival, a prominent Shakespearean festival held each year. The area is teeming
with both obvious and subtle tributes to one of Canada's founding nations. Shakespeare
Country has an expansive and pristine shoreline that is ideal for exploring, especially
at Pinery
Provincial Park, which is home to one of the few remaining Oak Savanna forests
in North America. The region boasts a number of significant attractions, such
as the Banting
House National Historic Site in London, which pays tribute to the Canadian
doctor who discovered insulin, and the Canadian
Baseball Hall of Fame in St.
Marys, which celebrates Canada's proud baseball history.
